Mouse Prevention & Guide
Rodents may be small, but the problems they cause can be big. From damaging property to spreading disease, mice and voles are common pests throughout Calgary and surrounding areas. Here's what to know about the three main types you're most likely to encounter—how to spot them, why they're a concern, and how to prevent them from moving in.
Tips to Prevent Infestations
-
Seal holes and cracks around foundations, doors, and vents
-
Keep food in airtight containers
-
Don’t leave pet food or bird seed accessible
-
Declutter storage areas and keep boxes off the floor
-
Trim vegetation and remove outdoor debris close to buildings
-
Keep compost bins and garbage sealed tightly
House Mouse

Colour - Light brown to grey, with a lighter belly
Size - 2.5"–4" body, with a tail roughly the same length
Ears- Large and prominent
Habitat - Indoors—especially kitchens, pantries, basements, and walls
Summary
House mice are the most common indoor rodent. They're excellent climbers and squeeze through holes as small as a dime. Once inside, they’ll nest in wall voids and near food sources. They leave behind droppings, contaminate food, chew through materials, and reproduce rapidly—up to 35 young per year per female.
Deer Mouse

Colour - Brown with a white belly and white feet
Size - 3"–4" body, with a bicolored tail
Ears - Large
Habitat - More common in rural homes, garages, sheds, and cabins
Summary
Deer mice tend to live outdoors but often enter structures for shelter—especially in colder months. Unlike house mice, they are strongly associated with the hantavirus, a potentially serious disease transmitted through their droppings and urine. If you suspect deer mice, avoid sweeping or vacuuming droppings directly—professional cleanup is recommended.
Field Mouse (Vole)

Colour - Brown to grey
Size - 3.5"–5"
Tail - Shorter than a deer or house mouse
Habitat - Lawns, gardens, and under snow cover during winter
Summary
Voles are outdoor rodents that tunnel through grass and soil, leaving visible surface runways and damaging roots, gardens, and young trees. While they don’t usually enter homes, they can cause significant lawn and landscaping damage year-round, especially during spring thaw when their trails become visible.
Rodent Risks
All of these rodents can:
-
Contaminate food and surfaces
-
Chew through wiring, insulation, and drywall
-
Carry bacteria and diseases like salmonella and hantavirus
-
Trigger allergies and asthma, especially in children
Rodents are stealthy and fast breeders—so small signs can quickly become big infestations. If you’ve seen droppings, heard scratching in the walls, or noticed damage to food or wiring, it’s time to act. Our team can identify the species, locate nesting areas, and provide a safe and effective solution.
