Wasp Prevention & Guide

Wasps are one of the most aggressive pests around Calgary during the warmer months. Whether you’re enjoying a BBQ or working in the yard, these stinging insects can quickly become a problem—especially when they build nests near homes, decks, or play areas. Here's what you need to know about wasps in Calgary and how to protect your property.

Tips to Prevent Wasps
  • Keep food covered outdoors, especially sweets and meats

  • Seal garbage bins tightly and rinse recyclables

  • Inspect eaves and overhangs regularly for new nests

  • Keep windows and doors screened

  • Trim shrubs and trees away from your home

  • Avoid strong floral scents when spending time outdoors

Colour  - Bright yellow with black markings

Size - 10–16 mm

Habitat - Underground nests, wall voids, attics, or hanging nests under eaves

Summary

Yellowjackets are highly aggressive and responsible for most wasp stings in the Calgary area. They are territorial and will defend their nest if disturbed. They also scavenge for meat and sugary foods, making them a nuisance at outdoor gatherings.

Paper Wasps

Colour  - Brown with yellow or reddish markings

Size - 16–20 mm

Habitat - Open umbrella-shaped nests under decks, railings, eaves, and soffits

Summary

Paper wasps are less aggressive than yellowjackets but will still sting if provoked. Their nests are exposed and often found hanging from horizontal surfaces. These wasps help control garden pests but aren’t welcome near entryways or play areas.

Hornets

Colour  - Black with white or yellow markings (depending on species)

Size - Up to 25 mm

Habitat - Large ball-shaped nests in trees, shrubs, or under rooflines

Summary

Hornets build large, enclosed paper nests and can be very defensive if the nest is disturbed. Their stings are more painful due to the size of the insect and their tendency to sting multiple times.

Why are Wasps a Problem?
  • Painful Stings: Wasps can sting repeatedly and are aggressive when threatened

  • Allergy Risk: Stings can cause severe allergic reactions in some people

  • Nesting Hazards: Nests near doors, windows, or outdoor living spaces increase the risk of encounters

Wasps are most active from late spring through early fall. Colonies grow rapidly and can become more aggressive later in the season as food becomes scarce. Let us handle it safely. Our team is trained to identify the species, remove the nest without risk, and prevent future infestations. Whether it’s in your attic, yard, or under your deck—we’ve got you covered.
