Spider Prevention & Guide

Spiders are a common sight in homes across Calgary, especially in basements, garages, and quiet corners. While most are harmless—and even helpful at controlling other pests—some can be a nuisance, and their presence often makes people uncomfortable. Here’s what to know about the types of spiders in Calgary, why they show up, and how to keep them out.

Tips to Prevent Spiders
  • Seal cracks and gaps around doors, windows, and foundations

  • Keep basements and storage areas clean and clutter-free

  • Vacuum regularly, especially in corners, under furniture, and around windows

  • Use screens on windows and vents

  • Reduce indoor lighting at night, which attracts the insects spiders feed on

  • Store firewood away from your home’s foundation

Common House Spider

Colour  - Yellowish-brown with darker markings

Size - Small body, about 5–8 mm

Habitat - Corners of ceilings, basements, closets, garages

Summary

These are the spiders most people see indoors. They build messy cobwebs in out-of-the-way spots and feed on other insects. They’re harmless to humans and often go unnoticed until webs become more obvious.

Wolf Spider

Colour  - Brown or grey with a hairy body and long legs

Size - 10–35 mm (some are quite large)

Habitat - Near doors, windows, basements, and garages—often on the ground

Summary

Unlike web-builders, wolf spiders are hunters. They don’t spin webs, instead chasing down prey. They may look intimidating due to their size, but they are not dangerous. Occasionally, they wander inside by mistake.

Cellar Spider (Daddy Long Legs)

Colour  - Pale yellow or light grey

Size - Tiny body with very long, thin legs

Habitat - Basements, storage rooms, crawlspaces

Summary

Often found hanging upside down in corners, cellar spiders are harmless and fragile. They spin small, loose webs and eat other spiders and insects.

Black Widow Spider (Rare in Calgary)

Colour  - Glossy black with a red hourglass marking on the underside

Size - 10–15 mm

Habitat - Occasionally in woodpiles, sheds, or cluttered outdoor areas

Summary

Black widows are rarely found in Calgary, but it’s good to be cautious. They’re shy and avoid contact, but their bite is venomous. If bitten, seek medical attention right away.

Are Spiders Dangerous?

Most spiders in Calgary are harmless and avoid humans. Bites are extremely rare and usually only occur when a spider is trapped against the skin. Still, large populations or unexpected sightings inside the home can be unsettling.
